Australia accounts for 5% of the world's land area and around 2% of the world's cattle. The Gcology F-NIRS service was set up to assist people to manage cattle humanely and sustainably within Australian environments.

Dung provides a true record of the diet of the animal, thus it is not necessary to sample vegetation to infer the diet. Controlled studies in which cattle were fed known diets were used to develop NIRS equations which predict diet quality from samples of dung.
